'Kupal' wins best cinematographer at Nigeria's Realtime festival

Iranian feature 'Kupal', directed by Kazem Mollaie, received the Best Cinematographer award for Majid Gorgian at the Third Realtime International Film Festival (RTF) in Lagos, Nigeria.

'Kupal' was nominated in four categories, including Best Film (Kazem Mollaie), Best Actor (late Iranian actor Levon Haftvan), Best Cinematography (Majid Gorjian), and Best Soundtrack (Babak Mirzakhani).

'Kupal' narrates the story of a hunter and taxidermist who goes through an unfortunate incident by trapping himself in his basement with little food and no water, having to survive by using creative and desperate means. The storyline of Kupal and the tagline is, 'you can’t be alone in this world!'

Mollaie's feature film debut took part in the competitive section of Fajr Film Festival in February 2017 and recently won the best feature award at the 'Around' Film Festival in Amsterdam, Best Feature Film Award at the 13th Huntington Beach Film Festival in US as well as the best foreign film award at the 26th edition of the Berkeley Video and Film Festival in the US.

The most recent achievements of 'Kupal' are its presence in the Cine Pobre Film Festival in Mexico and the Fourth Iranian Film Festival of Zurich in Switzerland, as well as winning the Best Cinematography Award from the Fifth Fine Arts Film Festival in the US.

Iranian-Armenian actor Haftvan died March 10 at the age of 51 following an incident which occurred on the set of a new production he was shooting.

The RTF catalogue theme for 2018 was 'Stories That Touch'. The festival's mission, according to the event's website, is to "champion an artistic baseline where equity and openness is enhanced among creative artists, filmmakers and film enthusiasts".

The festival was held from June 24-30.
