Iraq announces end of operations in Hawija

The commander of liberation operation in Hawija, Iraq, against Daesh, announced on Tuesday evening that the area has been completely liberated.

General Abdul Amir Rashid Yarallah said, “The liberation of Hawija in the oil-rich southwestern Governorate of Kirkuk has been completed,” IRNA reported.

Haider al-Abadi had earlier announced that Daesh terrorists were restricted to the Syrian border.

According to the NINA, UN Mission in Iraq expressed happiness at the news and said in a statement, “Although the United Nations is relieved that fighting in and near Hawija in Kirkuk Governorate is ending, humanitarian partners remain deeply concerned about the safety of civilian populations.”

The statement quoted the Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq, Lise Grande saying, “More than 5.4 million civilians have been displaced in Iraq since 2014,” adding “Millions of Iraqis have been helped to safety and protected by the Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government during the conflict.”
