The opening round of matches in Group C of the competition saw both sides overcome their opponents as Iran beat Costa Rica by a single goal and African champion Zambia edged Portugal by a 2-1 score line to lead the group heading into second round. With little to choose between the sides, there is still plenty to play for.
In terms of possession and the number of chances created, Costa Rica and Portugal had the edge over Iran and Zambia respectively in their opening games of the competition. The final score lines reflected the reality of football, namely that domination does not always bring victory with it.
Fresh from defeating Costa Rica to register its first FIFA U-20 World Cup win in 40 years, Iran finds itself well placed to reach the second round of the competition for the first time. The only side in Group C never to set foot in the knockout stage, Asian side will achieve that goal with a game to spare if it defeats Zambia and the other match in the section between Costa Rica and Portugal ends in a draw.
Following the injury he picked up in their win over Portugal, Zambia is hopeful star striker Patson Daka will be available for selection for the crucial meeting with Iran.
Iran will face Portugal in the final round of group stage fixtures on Saturday May 27.
2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup started on May 20 in South Korea with the final game to be played on June 11.
