Four Paleolithic periods identified in western Iran

Operations to widen Kermanshah-Kurdestan freeway in the west of Iran have led to the identification of four Paleolithic periods in the area, according to the website of the Research Institute of Iran's Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization.

It quoted the head of the exploration team, Saman Heidari Gouran as saying that the second season of archeological explorations in Ivan cave and rocky shelter in central Kermanshah were completed by a team from Cambridge University under the supervision of the Archeology Research Institute and the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Department of Kermanshah Province, IRNA wrote.

Archeological explorations in Ivan cave and rocky shelters have exposed the risk of their destruction.

Ivan cave and the rocky shelter are located 35 kilometers from the city of Kermanshah along the Kermanshah-Kamyaran Road, Heidari Gouran said.

The research aims to identify the oldest human settlement in Kermanshah and Zagros Mountains and specific its transition from the Middle to New Paleolithic era, he noted.
