German police find parcel containing explosives at finance ministry

An "explosive" package has been found at German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble's office building on the eve of a visit by US Secretary of Treasury Steven Mnuchin.

Berlin police said in a statement on Wednesday that the package was intercepted in the ministry's mail room, adding that it "contained an explosive mix."

The statement said the substance found in the parcel is often used in making fireworks. "It was designed to cause severe injuries when the package is opened."

Over the past two years, Germany has suffered several attacks of terrorist nature both from elements of its far-right, nationalist groups and people believed to have links to the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group, which is mainly based in Iraq and Syria.

More than a million people were admitted into Germany from an influx of refugees that began to hit Europe in early 2015.

Many say the liberal policies of German Chancellor Angela Merkel on refugees are to blame for a surge in security threats. The criticism forced Berlin to revise criteria for accepting refugees, saying only those from war-ravaged territories, including Syria, would be welcome.
