Iranian powerlifter snatches Rio Paralympics gold

Iran's Majid Farzin seized the gold medal of powerlifting event on the fifth day of Rio 2016 Paralympics.

On Monday, Farzin, 32, who had taken part in the men’s -80-kilogram Group A powerlifting competitions at the 6500-seat indoor Riocentro-Pavilion 2 arena, raised 240 kilograms overhead to finish in the first place, Press TV reported.

“I had trained intensely for months to clinch this medal. I thank God that all my earlier efforts finally bore fruit, and I could bring honor to my family and nation,” Farzin said after the contest.

His Chinese competitor Gu Xiaofei claimed silver with a lift of 228kg. Uzbek weightlifter Giorgi Chkheidze elevated 207kg to earn the bronze medal.
