Fajr International Film Festival opens

The 33rd Fajr International Film Festival opened on Saturday in Tehran.

At the inaugural ceremony, which was held at Mellat Cinema Complex, the event's secretary, Alireza Rezadad presented a brief report and folklore groups performed live music, according to fajrfilmfestival.com

Australian film director Rolf de Heer, a member of the festival's international jury, told Iran Daily, "I was invited to the event to be on the jury, I have never been to Iran before. I have been welcomed very well. I look forward to seeing good films."

Among de Heer's movies are 'Ten Canoes' (2006) and 'Charlie's Country' (2013). The latter was selected to compete in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.

The opening day of FIFF began with the screening of films made by auteur Abbas Kiarostami’s students in his workshops. Panel discussions were also held on the sidelines.

For the first time, Kiarostami's 'Certified Copy' was shown in a special screening session. This film, dubbed into Persian, was screened in the halls allocated to Art and Experience section.

Before the screening, Kiarostami along with his students from a number of countries spoke about cinema to the audience in a workshop.

The festival features sections such as Salvation (world cinema), East Panorama (Asian and Islamic countries) national and documentary.

Twelve foreign films will be screened in the non-competitive documentary section. They include: 'White Butterfly', directed by Iranian Behrouz Nouranipour, 'Energized' from Austria, 'Marvel Renaissance' from France, 'The Voice of Sokurov' from Germany, 'Art and Craft' from USA and 'We Are Many' from the UK.

The event is also being hosted at Azadi Cinema, Iran Film Museum and Artists House.

The 33rd FIFF will be held from April 25 to May 2. This is the first year the international section is being held independently from the national section.
