The First Islamic World Photo Biennial opened on Monday at Saba Cultural-Artistic Institute.
Secretary of the event, Seyyed Abbas Mirhashemi told ISNA that the event is being held in cooperation with Iran’s Academy of Arts.
Commenting on the biennial’s objectives, he said, “It aims to establish an extensive movement in photography among Muslim nations, identify new talents, form a comprehensive photo databank as well as create conditions for exchange of views among Muslim artists.“
He added that the first biennial is themed ’Family’ since the family is the cornerstone for promoting culture, education as well as moral and social values.
“Out of 6,150 works submitted to the biennial’s secretary, 180 photos were selected by a panel of jury comprising of prominent artists such as American photographer James Nachtwey and Bahman Jalali,“ he said. Sheikh Moslehuddin SaĠdi Shirazi
For the first time, a bilingual German-Persian anthology of quatrains by renowned Iranian poet Sheikh Moslehuddin Sa’di Shirazi will soon be released in German-speaking countries.
Translated by Khosrow Naghed, the book includes 92 poems and has taken over two years to complete. Speaking to MNA, Naghed said, “Last year I signed a contract with a German publisher to release the book concurrent with the 2008 Frankfurt Book Fair in October.“
He added that original poems in Persian will be designed in calligraphy styles.
“I have compiled the book based on German linguist and poet Friedrich Ruckert’s eloquent translations of Sa’di sonnets.“
The translator, who has also rendered Khayyam quatrains, believes that such undertakings will help improve cultural interaction between the East and the West.
“I try my best to make German readers acquainted with Iranian culture and Persian literature via my translations,“ he said.
Born in Shiraz in 1194 AD, Sa’di is recognized as one of the most eminent poets in the history of Persian literature. His best known works are Boustan (The Orchard) and Golestan (The Rose Garden).
Boustan is entirely in verse and consists of stories aptly illustrating the standard virtues recommended to Muslims as well as reflections on the behavior of dervishes and their ecstatic practices. Golestan is mainly in prose and contains stories and personal anecdotes. The text is interspersed with a variety of short poems, containing aphorisms, advice, and humorous reflections. Sa’di demonstrates a profound awareness of the absurdity of human existence.

Iranian musician Majid Nazempour has designed three variations of the Persian ’Chang’, a string musical instrument resembling the harp.
He made the instruments from designs recorded in ancient pictures and manuscripts. “The new Chang has a beautiful oriental sound which is completely different from that of the harp,“ he told IRNA.
Nazempour, a renowned musician who plays the lute, hopes to use the new instruments in concerts held by Zaryab, the music ensemble he manages.
Chang, a popular string instrument in ancient Persia, was a recurring theme in many of the country’s miniatures.
