City Theater
Nine theatrical performances are on stage at Tehran theater halls, including City Theater Complex as well as Vahdat, Sangelaj and Honar halls.
The play ’Uncle Tom’s Cabin’, directed by Behrouz Gharibpour, is on stage at City Theater’s Main Hall. Based on an anti-slavery drama by Harriet Beecher Stowe, ’Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ was among the entries to the 26th Fajr International Theater Festival, MNA reported.
Nima Dehqan’s ’Cadence’, a play about the after-death adventures of three people is being performed at City Theater’s performance workshop. An adaptation of Afshin Hashemi’s fairy tale ’Hassan and the Demon of the Narrow Road Behind the Mountains’ is also on stage at the complex’s Qashqai Hall.
Manijeh Mahami is staging ’The Exonerated’, written by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen, at Chaharsou Hall.
Other performances, including ’The Giants’ by Hamid Pourazari, ’Doll Fables’ by Farnaz Behzadi and ’My Strange Friend’ by Majid Mollahossein, are on stage at Sayeh, Sangelaj and Honar halls, respectively. Ali Pouyan’s ’Roudaki, Green Words’ Wizard’ and Fahimeh Mirza Hosseini’s ’Wedding’ are being presented at Vahdat Hall and Performance House.

Tehran Set for Book Fair

This yearÕs international book fair will be officially inaugurated on April 30.
Deputy manager of the 21st Tehran International Book Fair has said that 1,670 local publishers have been allocated their pavilions for the event slated for May 1-11.
Speaking to Fars news agency, Hamid Qobadi further said, “We had earlier promised that publishers and other participants would be given their pavilions from April 24. The publishers whose pavilions are located in the nocturnal prayer room have taken charge of their pavilions.“
Qobadi did not mention the criteria for assigning space to publishers and said, “We have followed the same policy as last year in assigning pavilion space to publishers.“
He recalled that 90 percent of foreign books have arrived and been given to publishers for arranging in the pavilions.
This year’s international book fair will be inaugurated in Tehran’s Grand Prayer Grounds (Mosalla) on April 30. Over 2,500 local and foreign publishers will be participating in the event.

IRIB to Air Documentary on Farshchian Works

A documentary trilogy featuring the works of celebrated Iranian miniaturist Mahmoud Farshchian will be aired by Islamic Republic of Iran’s Broadcasting.
Produced by Ali Atshani, the film, which focuses on the maestro’s recent works, will be broadcast soon on IRIB’s Channel 4.
“The title of each episode of the documentary bears the name of Farshchian’s tableaux: ’Ghadir’, ’Molana’ and ’Trial’,“ Atshani told IRNA.
He added that the documentary will be produced in the form of a feature film on Farshchian’s return from the USA.
The 77-year-old artist, currently residing in New Jersey, USA, is the most prominent modernizer in the field of miniatures.
His masterpieces have been displayed in several museums and exhibitions worldwide.
Farshchian held 51 solo exhibitions and participated in 83 group events during 1948-94.

Daneshvar PhD Thesis for Release

Renowned Iranian authoress Simin Daneshvar plans to publish her doctoral thesis on the occasion of her 87th birthday.
Speaking to ISNA, Daneshvar said, “The thesis is themed ’Beauty in Persian literature until the 7th Century AH’ and will soon be published by Niloofar Publishing House.“
Qatreh Publications recently released her latest work ’Choice’.
The author’s important works, namely ’To Whom Shall I Say Hello’ will be reprinted soon.
Daneshvar has a number of ’firsts’ to her credit. In 1948, her collection of Persian short stories was the first by an Iranian woman to be published. The first novel by an Iranian woman was her ’Sou va Shoun’ which has become Iran’s bestselling novel ever. Daneshvar’s ’Playhouse’, a collection of five stories and two autobiographical pieces, is the first volume of translated stories by an Iranian authoress.

Achaemenid TV Serial Planned

A serial on the life of one of the two Achaemenid monarchs Cyrus or Darius will be produced in the year to March 2010, announced a TV producer.
Speaking to Fars news agency, Mohsen Ali Akbari said, “The research phase of the project has ended and we are negotiating with our partners to produce a serial either on Cyrus or Darius.“
He noted that the project will be completed with the participation of international partners.
On the features of the serials, he said, “Symbols of architectural style of the Achaemenid era exist in Persepolis and we will use them as reference. By using computer technology and advanced special effects, we intend to provide a suitable ambiance of the period.“
He noted that he will utilize the best possible technical team and actors at the international level to make sure that the quality of the work is the highest.
Ali Akbari is currently working on a TV show called ’Ladder to the Sky’.

Darroudi Exhibit in May

An exhibition of works by renowned surrealist painter, Iran Darroudi will open at Tehran’s Museum of Contemporary Arts on May 7.
According to IRNA, the event is a sequel to a number of exhibitions commemorating veteran Iranian artists, including Hossein Zendehroudi and Masoud Arabshahi.
Darroudi is a graduate of TV direction and production from R.C.A. Institute of New York.
Some of her paintings include, ’The Bold Persian Gulf’, ’Eternal Marriage’, and ’Everlasting Portrait’.
She has so far held some 48 individual and 45 group exhibitions in Iran, France, Switzerland, Japan, Italy, Germany, US and Canada.
The exhibit will run through June 11.
