World Book Day Celebrated
097401.jpg
More than 100 countries took part on Wednesday in the 13th World Book and Copyright Day celebrations.
In 1996, UNESCO designated April 23 as World Book and Copyright Day since on this date in 1616, Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died.
Publishers, book shops, libraries, schools, cultural institutions and authors’ associations worldwide celebrated the day to promote the enduring importance of books, reported MNA quoting the entity’s website.
In 2008, proclaimed International Year of Languages by the General Assembly of the United Nations, UNESCO underlined the linguistic aspect of publishing.
“When a language has no access to the world of publishing, it is excluded--together with those who speak it--from a significant part of the intellectual life and economic activity of society,“ declared UNESCO’s director general, Ko•chiro Matsuura in a message on the occasion. “In this context, it is then a matter of urgency to give languages broader access to publishing, so as to promote the exchange of books and editorial content,“ he added.
Amsterdam is 2008 World Book Capital City. The Dutch city is planning to hold a wide range of events of international scope throughout the year including: holding conferences on copyright, scientific publishing, inter-culturality in literary creation, and children’s books.
Beirut will be World Book Capital City in 2009.

There will be a people who will carry knowledge around with them, but it will not pass beyond their shoulders. Their innermost thoughts will contradict what they display in public, and their actions will contradict what they know.
