Iran Honors Sa’di
Iranians celebrate April 20 as the national day of Sheikh Moslehuddin Mushrif ibn Abdullah Sa’di Shirazi, a prominent classical Persian poet and mystic.
Several literary figures are to commemorate the poet today in a conference.
Head of Sa’di Research Center, Kourosh Kamali-Sarvestani, told the Persian daily ’Iran’ that topics for discussion are centered on the poet’s masterpiece ’Golestan’ (The Rose Garden).
Gholamhossein Ebrahimi-Dinani, Mohammad Yousefi-Nayyeri, Mir Jalaleddin Kazzazi and Ali Mohammad Haqshenas are among the lecturers attending the event.
Born in Shiraz in 1194 AD, Sa’di is recognized as one of the most eminent poets in the history of Persian literature.
Sa’di’s numerous travels and adventures, which took almost 30 years (between 1226 and 1256), are very much like those of Marco Polo who traveled in the Middle East from 1271-1294.
The valuable experiences gained from these extensive journeys are brilliantly reflected in his two famous works, Boustan (The Orchard) and Golestan.

Iranian Academy of Persian Language and Literature Director Hassan Habibi has expressed disappointment over the inadequate funds for Iranian academies.
In an awards ceremony held at the National Library of Iran on Thursday (April 17), he complained that Iran’s academies do not even have a place of their own to hold ceremonies, MNA reported.
“Venues for Iranian academies are still not ready, and at the current rate of funding for construction projects, the buildings will not be completed for years,“ he said.
Habibi explained, “The process of repairing the office and the research center of the Iranian Academy of Persian Language and Literature and the buildings of the Iranian Academy of Science and the Iranian Academy of Medical Sciences is too slow and they still need time and money to be completed.“
Esmaeil Sa’adat of the Iranian Academy of Persian Language and Literature, Parviz Davami of the Iranian Academy of Science, Abdolkarim Vesal of the Iranian Academy of Medical Sciences, and Hossein Kalqichi-Ganjineh of the Iranian Academy of Arts were honored at the ceremony for their outstanding contributions.

Sanctions Will Not Affect Book Fair
Sanctions imposed on Iran over its nuclear issue will not affect the upcoming 21st Tehran International Book Fair, said an official with the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance.
Speaking to MNA, Mohammad Reza Vasfi said, “No publisher has boycotted the fair for political reasons.“
A number of international Islamic scholars and Iranologists will also visit the Tehran book fair, he told MNA.
Several Arab and European publishers have applied for participation in the fair, Vasfi said, adding that a series of meetings on international marketing, meant to enhance coordination between Iranian publishers and their foreign counterparts, will be held on the sidelines of the exhibition.
