’Inner Eye’, a Major Photography Event
The ’Inner Eye’ exhibition, which is underway at Tehran’s Museum of Contemporary Arts, is a major event in contemporary Iranian photography.
Announcing this, Siamak Zommorrodi-Motlaq, head of the Iranian Association of Theater Photographers, told ISNA that photos on display at the event, each pertaining to 100 years ago, are of great significance.
“Works by noted Italian photographer Riccardo Zipoli, look into architecture photography from a new perspective,“ he said, adding that a section depicting the history of Iranian photography from the Qajar period to the present era is a unique opportunity.
The exhibition, which opened on March 19, is being held in six sections, including ’A Pioneer’, which is a retrospective of nature photographer the late Nikol Faridani, who died recently.
’A City--Bam’ and ’A Vision’, are two other sections featuring the works of Iranian artists Mohammad Reza Javadi and Majid Kourangi-Beheshti, respectively. The event will run through April 22

Kiarostami to Stage Mozart Comedy

Iranian auteur Abbas Kiarostami and Irish actress Fiona Shaw, most familiar for her minor role as Petunia Dursley in Harry Potter films, are to make their English National Opera (ENO) directorial debuts, in a new season that will seek to refresh the artform by bringing in fresh names from outside the opera world.
Kiarostami, director of ’Taste of Cherry’ and ’Through the Olive Trees’, will direct the Mozart comedy ’Cos“ fan tutte’--something of a departure, perhaps, for a man whose masterpiece concerns a suicidal man driving around the labor markets of Tehran to find a man to dig his grave, reported ISNA quoting guardian.co.uk.
“I’ve admired his work for a long time,“ said ENO artistic director, John Berry.
“He has always said that with films, he will work with whatever constraints he has to, and he is aware of the limitations of opera. He’s very good at directing intense relationships between people in his films, which I think will be perfect for Cos“. I think it’s a good idea that he didn’t choose a big chorus piece as his first opera,“ he said.

Noted Iranian filmmaker Hana Makhmalbaf’s ’Buddha Collapsed out of Shame’ won the ’ENI Windows on the World Prize’ at the 18th African, Asian, and Latin American Film Festival of Milan, Italy, running from April 9-13.
The film is about a six-year old Afghan girl who is struggling to get permission to go to school, MNA reported.
This is the 10th international award the film has received over the past few months. The film’s other awards include the Special Jury Prize From the 55th San Sebastian festival 2007, the UNICEF ’Paolo Ungari’ special award in Rome 2007 as well as the Crystal Bear and Special Peace Award at the 58th Berlin International Film festival.

3 Films to Be Screened in US
A number of Iranian films are to be screened in James Madison’s Library of Washington in the next few days.

The library which has actively started recording movies of the world since 1942 shows international works by putting them on file every year.

Old Tehran Sacred Places on Show
International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) is holding a photo exhibition at Sahebqaranieh Palace Museum featuring old Tehran’s sacred places.
The 3-week exhibition opened April 18 to mark the International Day for Monuments and Sites, said MNA.
About 40 black and white photos dating back to the late Qajar (1792-1925) and early Pahlavi eras are on display at the event.
The photos, borrowed from photographer and collector Dariush Tahami, show a number of Tehran’s sacred places, including Hazrat Abdol Azim Shrine and Imamzadeh Saleh Shrine.
This year, ICOMOS suggested the theme of ’religious heritage and sacred places’ for International Day for Monuments and Sites.
