2 Films for Cannes Market
Iranian films ’Simply’, directed by Seyyed Reza Mirkarimi, and ’The Son of Soil’ by Mohammad Ali Ahangar, will be presented in the upcoming 61st Cannes Film Market.
Produced by Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO), the films were among the entries to the 26th Fajr International Film Festival, according to IRNA.

’Simply’, which also won the festival’s top prize Simorgh (phoenix) in the international section, focuses on the situation of Iranian married women typified by the central character played by Hengameh Qaziani.
The cast of the film includes Nayyereh Farahani and Mehran Kashani.
’The Son of Soil’ belongs to a genre of Iranian films known as ’Sacred Defense’ (1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war).
The film is about a martyr’s widow heading for Iraqi Kurdistan to repatriate her husband’s remains to Iran. The main roles in the film are taken by Mahtab Nassirpour, Shabnam Moqaddami, Hamid Ebrahimi, Hassan Najjarian and Hossein Ahangar.
Meanwhile, another Iranian film ’We Only Live Twice’, directed by Behnam Behzadi, as well as Saman Salvar’s ’Tehran’s Lonely Song’ may be possible entries for the festival’s peripheral section.
Acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami’s ’Shirin’ is also expected to be among the entries at the prestigious festival.
The official selection for Cannes, scheduled for May 14-25, will be announced on April 23.

Veteran Writer Dies
Veteran Iranian writer and one of the founders of children’s poetry, Parvin Dowlatabadi, died of a heart attack on Tuesday at the age of 84.
The author studied interior photography in the UK. She was one of the founders of Children’s Book Council of Iran and had collected a wide range of children’s book with the assistance of Leili Iman-Ahi, said MNA.
She had also authored over 20 books for children.
’Fire and Water’, ’The Stone City’, ’The Silvery Crescent’, ’Sailing on Clouds’ and ’Sparrow and the Toad’, are among her memorable books.

Leader Donates Precious Qur’an
Supreme Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has donated a handwritten copy of the holy Qur’an attributed to Imam Hussein (AS), the third Imam of the infallible household of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), to the Astan-e Qods Museum in Mashhad, Khorasan Razavi province.
The book features the verses ’Saba’, ’Ahzab’, and ’Luqman’ designed in Kufi script on eight pages made of deerskin,Public Relations Department of the Libraries, Museums Organization and Documents Center of Astan-e Qods Razavi Foundation said in a press release faxed to Iran Daily.
The book bears an autograph at the end reading ’Written by Hussein ibn Ali’, and a seal print of Shah Ismail, the founder of the Safavid dynasty (1502-1736).
Ayatollah Khamenei has donated over 9,000 manuscripts to the museum, which is the largest collective donation the entity has received so far. Astan-e Qods Foundation is the custodian of the holy shrine of the Eighth Imam of the infallible household of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Imam Reza (AS) in Mashhad.
’Spotlight on Iran’ At Canadian Event
Hot Docs, the Canadian international documentary festival is scheduled to screen four Iranian movies in its ’Spotlight on Iran’ section this year.
’Tehran Has No More Pomegranates’, directed by Masoud Bakhshi, ’The Red Card’ by Mahnaz Afzali, ’Where Do I Belong?’ by Mahvash Sheikholeslami and ’It Is Always Late for Freedom ’ by Mehrdad Oskuei, are the four Iranian entries.
’Head Wind’ by Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof will also make its international dŽbut at the international spectrum section, ISNA reported.
The process of making documentaries in Iran will also be discussed in a session ’Iran to You’ on April 24, which will be attended by Iranian filmmakers.
A total of 170 films from 36 countries will go on screen in ten sections of the festival which will run from April 17-27.
Praying, Supplication Festival in June
The First Artistic Festival on Praying and Supplications will be held in Tehran in June with the aim of benefiting from the language of art in promoting valuable concepts in the field.
According to a press release faxed to Iran Daily, head of Niavaran Cultural House, Asghar Mehr-Aein said that due to public demand and the advent of Norouz (Iranian new year) holidays (March 20-April 1), the deadline for submitting works to the festival’s secretariat has been extended until April 20.
The event seeks to depict the role of prayers and supplication in physical and psychological health of the society as well as the impact of supplication on individual and social morality.
The festival will be organized by Artistic Department and Headquarters for Prayers of Culture and Islamic Guidance Ministry as well as Niavaran Artistic Creations Foundation.

Concert in Spain Honors Molana
A group of Iranian and European musicians staged a concert on April 12 in Spain to commemorate the renowned Iranian poet and mystic Molana Jalaleddin Rumi.
Noted Iranian vocalist Salar Aqili was accompanied by his fellow musicians Behnam Samani, Reza Samani, Shahram Gholami and Davoud Varzideh, along with the musicians of Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, including Odd Hannisdal, Elisabeth Eid, Cardas Emery, and Marius Flatby.
The concert was held Center in Madrid’s Delacia church in cooperation with Persepolis Cultural.
