Normalization

Kazem Jalali
|
Iran and Egypt have underlined the desire for normalizing ties in recent months. Egypt’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit recently stressed the necessity of resuming bilateral ties with Iran.
An Iranian parliamentary delegation is due to visit Cairo late January. However, the date of the visit has not been fixed and so is the early resumption of ties between the two Muslim states.
Kazem Jalali, rapporteur of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, is optimistic and believes that the time for resuming high-level diplomatic ties between Tehran and Cairo is near.
“Resumption of ties will not be in the distant future. Given the trend of normalization of relations, problems between the two countries will be resolved in the near future,“ he told Iran Daily’s Azam Mohebbi.
Jalali said unity and interaction between the two nations can lead to better cooperation at the regional and international levels.
“Normalization of ties is gaining more and more momentum in view of recent efforts by the two. Such a sensitive issue is also affected by international events, but the overall situation indicates a breakthrough in relations,“ he said.
Jalali further said Iran and Egypt enjoy rich civilizations, stressing that the two are also an influential factor behind Middle East developments.

Leader Recounts Ghadir’s Lessons
|
|
Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei
|
TEHRAN, Dec. 29--Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said the main lesson of Eid-e Ghadir is about fighting discord.
In a meeting with thousands of people in Tehran on the occasion of Feast of Ghadir on Saturday, Ayatollah Khamenei said relentless efforts aimed at establishing the Muslim society, as envisaged by Imam Ali (AS), are needed today, IRNA reported.
Felicitating all Muslims, the pious people and freedom-seekers, especially Iranians, on the occasion of Eid-e Ghadir, the leader opined that determining the path of Shiite Imams was the ideological function of Ghadir.
“Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) declaration of the holy Imams (as his successor) upon God’s order showed that in Islam’s perspective, administration is tantamount to imamate and does not merely deal with people’s routine affairs,“ he said.
He pointed out that the notion of imamate deals with administration of this world’s affairs and the lives of people in the Hereafter.
“Another dimension of Ghadir deals with the personality of Imam Ali (AS). The third dimension of Ghadir is the necessity of shaping the Muslim society as envisaged by Imam Ali’s (AS) model,“ he said.
The leader termed the main characteristics of the government of Imam Ali (AS) as justice, purity, monotheism, working for the sake of God, being kind toward humans and preventing deviation from the divine path.
“The Iranian nation has embraced the logic of imamate,“ he said.
Referring to the necessity of people’s vigilance toward enemy’s sophisticated activities aimed at sowing seeds of discord among Iranians, Ayatollah Khamenei said being aware of the enemy’s plots will foil the conspiracies of the world arrogant powers.
Commenting on the next Majlis elections, the leader said God willing, necessary directives will be issued and what is important is to consider elections as a divine test and people should be vigilant about enemy’s plots.

Sanctions
SEDA-YE EDALAT: Peace-seeking efforts of Iranians at home and abroad are praiseworthy. For instance, these efforts have encouraged the United States to drop the military option against Iran and start negotiations. Most nations agree that war leads to destructive consequences. However, advocates of war forget that the peace option not only prevents disputes, sanctions, war and violence, but also positively impacts the national will and technological development. Sanctions have repercussions such as brain drain, inflation and high prices, and deprive a peace-seeking nation of the right to live in peace. Therefore, the United States should be careful about the consequences of imposing further sanctions on Iran.
Tariffs
SARMAYEH: Reducing cellphone import tariffs from 60 percent to 25 percent will have a considerable impact on the price of mobile phones. However, it will also have a negative impact on the domestic production of cellphones and cut employment opportunities in the production sector by 10 percent. Therefore, the government should allocate subsidies and bank facilities to domestic cellphone manufacturers so that they may sustain their production lines in a profitable manner. This is while the Economy Ministry has defended lower cellphone tariffs without giving any thought to domestic producers.
Care Needed
JOMHOURI-YE ESLAMI: It was fortunate that Iraq’s Baath regime was toppled because it was oppressing both the Iranian as well as the Iraqi nation. Executed dictator of Iraq tore the Algiers Accord in front of cameras before imposing the 1980-88 war on Iran. Ever since Saddam took the reins of power, the Iraqi nation--be they Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds--faced constant pressure. They actually experienced one of the toughest and most oppressive times in Iraqi history. However, Kurds were supported by Iran both before and after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. After Saddam was toppled and Jalal Talabani became president of Iraq, Iran did not spare any effort in supporting the Iraqi Kurds in general and Talabani in particular. This has been confirmed by himself and prominent Kurdish political figures. However, London-based Al-Hayat daily recently quoted him as saying that he does not recognize the Algiers Accord any more. Talabani has denied this controversial statement. If true, Talabani has acted in a manner similar to Saddam. The 1975 accord signed by Iran and Iraq is internationally-recognized. As Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said, the Algiers Accord is irrevocable unless the two sides reach consensus to nullify it. Talabani should be more careful in commenting on sensitive issues.
Positive
TEHRAN-E EMROUZ: What are the implications of the recent African tour of First Vice President Parviz Davoudi? The trip is of great significance for President Ahmadinejad’s government that is keen on broadening cooperation with different continents. It actually took place within the framework of government’s foreign policy of expanding ties with Asian and African nations. Libya, for instance, is eager to cooperate with Iran in different sectors, including economy and politics. Hence, such visits can entail positive results at the international level.
