Students Day Commemorated
TEHRAN, Dec. 7--National Students Day was marked on 6th December in memory of students’ protest at Tehran University in 1953, three of whom were killed.
Iranian students protested the dangerous amity between Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the deposed shah of Iran, and the former US vice president, Richard Nixon.
The students’ hatred of United States sprang from the CIA-instigated coup against the government of late Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddeq on August 18, 1953, Presstv said.
Nixon’s trip to Iran in December 1953 fueled an anti-American uprising in Iran.
Tehran University students staged a demonstration on December 6, 1953, which was attacked by police, killing three of them.
Iranian universities have always been an important platform for demanding people’s freedom, rights and a humane society.
Prior to the Islamic Revolution, the occasion always met with police interference. After 1979, the government supported these annual events as an expression of the nation’s strong disapproval of the US policy.

Mohammad Javad Larijani
TEHRAN, Dec. 7--A senior Iranian official said Iran, Yemen and Iraq will join the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council in the near future.
Mohammad Javad Larijani, director of the Institute for Studies in Theoretical Physics and Mathematics, was speaking on the sidelines of the first meeting of the judiciary heads of Muslim countries in Tehran, Presstv reported.
Larijani, also a former deputy foreign minister, described the president’s Persian Gulf policy as “correct and successful“.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had attended on Monday the summit of PGCC members, which include Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait.
Larijani assessed the diplomatic measures as ’significant’ in the Persian Gulf and described Ahmadinejad’s presence at the Doha summit as “a historic development“.
The PGCC group was established to oppose the victory of the Islamic Revolution at the instigation of some western states. But over the past 30 years, PGCC members have realized that they have to be wary of foreign states, as Iran has proved its good intentions.

Azerbaijan Seeks Help in Fighting Drugs
TEHRAN, Dec. 7--Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan held a joint meeting to boost security along their marine borders.
The visiting Azeri delegation headed by Major General Elchin Ghuliyev called for Iran’s cooperation and assistance in their campaign against drugs, IRNA reported.
Ghuliyev said the two countries cooperated positively in the past to confront illegal immigration and human trafficking.
“Drug smuggling has assumed crisis proportions for Azerbaijan,“ he said.
Referring to the good performance of the Iranian police in confronting drug smuggling, Ghuliyev requested Iran’s cooperation.
The two sides also agreed to meet within six months to devise a comprehensive agreement for border cooperation.
Brigadier Qasem Rezaei, commander of Iran’s Border Police, said the two countries should cooperate to make the joint borders more stable and secure.
Rezaei said illegal immigration, drug smuggling and bootlegging are three major problems facing the police based at Azerbaijan’s borders.

Majlis Receives 24,000 Complaints
TEHRAN, Dec. 7--Some 24,690 complaints have been received by Majlis Article 90 Commission since the start of the current parliamentary term, a lawmaker said on Thursday.
Mohammad Madani, who heads a confidential committee of the commission, added that about 4,000 of these complaints were rejected because of lack of documents and evidence, IRNA reported.
“Some 6,000 complaints have also been handed over to the judiciary for further investigation,“ he said.
Madani, an MP from Gonabad, added that the commission has scrutinized 14,690--mostly economic--complaints in the past three years.
“Scrutinizing a case related to infected blood and problems of teachers who were not paid for undertaking missions as well as repealing the contract related to Imam Khomeini International Airport are some of the most important dossiers concluded in the commission,“ he said.
Majlis Article 90 Commission, a parliamentary body stipulated by Article 90 of the constitution, investigates complaints by citizens against any of the three branches of power.

Zionist Lobby
Iran: The report by 16 US intelligence agencies has declared that Iran is not seeking nuclear energy for military purposes. The National Intelligence Estimate verifies what the Islamic Republic has been stressing since past so many years: Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons. The Islamic Republic has been operating within the framework of regulations of the International Atomic Energy Agency and the provisions of the Non-Proliferation Treaty. The NIE report and the recent declaration by the International Atomic Energy Agency confirm that Iran has not deviated from the peaceful track of nuclear energy. It has created a conviction among other countries that US allegations against Iran are baseless. Logic dictates that such a confirmation by US intelligence agencies should become the basis of the US government’s policies. This is while we observe that the administration of President George W. Bush and the Republican neoconservatives are refusing to accept the writing on the wall. They are seriously under the influence of the Zionist lobby.

Shun Differences
TEHRAN-E EMROUZ: Politicians and political pundits of diverse persuasions are preparing for the upcoming parliamentary elections slated for March 14. Voter turnout in the general elections is of immense significance, especially when seen from the international perspective. Enemies of the state accuse Iran of undermining democratic principles. One of the key, and actually the leading, features of a working democratic system (as the word demo+cracy suggests) is the rule of the people through the ballot box. Therefore, the larger the public participation, the more democratic the ruling establishment. Political parties, if really committed to the values of the Islamic Revolution, should set aside differences and campaign for mass voter turnout.
