Inventors University Planned
TEHRAN, Nov. 10--An official said an inventors university will be established in the country to help inventors pursue higher education.
Speaking in the First Seminar of the Iranian Inventors Association on Saturday, Davoud Bahman, the head of the association, opined that establishment of the university will help the scientific and qualitative development of inventors, Fars News Agency reported.
He noted that the university will also prepare the grounds for the international registration of inventions and prepare them for mass production at the industrial scale.
“A total of 2,200 inventors with 8,000 registered inventions are members of the association. East Azarbaijan with 400 inventors has the largest number of members in the association,“ he said.
The official pointed out that the main reason for holding the seminar was to clarify the association’s objectives, adopt new policies and familiarize each other with Iranian inventions.
“Encouraging high-level scientific research and improvement of inventions are among other objectives pursued by the seminar,“ he said.
Bahman noted that the status of research and the manner in which inventions are registered in the country is not satisfactory in Iran.
“A total of 115,000 inventions was registered worldwide in 2006, of which only 5,000 belonged to developing countries. About 60 percent of registered inventions pertained to India,“ he said.

US Will Not Win Iran War
|

Joschka Fischer
|
VIENNA, Austria,
Nov. 10--The US will not win if it opts for a new war with Iran, Germany’s former Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer said on Saturday.
Any US attack on Iran would be a ’nightmare’, said Fischer during a discussion at Vienna’s Institute for Human Sciences, IRNA reported.
He described as ’shocking’ comments on the issue made by Rudolph Giuliani, who is one of the Republican candidates for the 2008 presidential election.
Giuliani said last month: “If I become president of the United States, I guarantee you, we will never find out what they will do if they get nuclear weapons, because they are not going to get a nuclear weapon.“
“The military option is not off the table.“
Fischer said the upcoming elections in Iran and the US could heighten tensions between the two countries over Tehran’s nuclear program. He warned the US not to start another war that could not be won.
The United States is spearheading international efforts to thwart Iran’s atomic work, but Iran denies western charges that it is trying to build atomic weapons.

New Satellites Coming
TEHRAN, Nov. 10--Communications and Information Technology Minister Mohammad Soleymani said the people will hear good news about Iran’s new satellites in the coming days.
Speaking in the opening ceremony of the International Space Week (Nov. 10-16), Soleymani noted that Iran should make progress in the field of space technology in a gradual manner, IRNA reported.
“Iran’s Space Organization has already ushered in space technology and this move should be strengthened,“ he said.
The minister noted that all humans are entitled to space technology and no country or group should monopolize it.
“Now we can make use of information collected by satellites and space knowledge to assist urban, security, environmental, social and cultural issues,“ he said.
Asked about the Zohreh satellite, Soleymani said some issues related to Zohreh should not be covered by the print media.
“If Iran can make use of space potential, it will certainly make progress in future,“ he said.
The minister opined that Iran is a pioneer in astronomy and its observatories have always contributed to this field of science. He reminded that progress in the field of space technology requires long-term planning.
Soleymani elaborated on the positive aspects of space sciences in helping reduce the damage caused by natural disasters, including floods, earthquakes and water shortage.

Ban Warns of Global Warming Threat
KING GEORGE ISLAND, Antarctica,
Nov. 10--UN Chief Ban Ki-moon flew to Antarctica on a fact-finding mission for climate change, becoming the first UN leader to make an official visit to the frozen continent.
Ban, who has made climate change a priority during his term in office, received a briefing from scientists at Chile’s President Eduardo Frei Air Force base in Antarctica before visiting the Collins Glaciers and the Sejong Research Centre, AFP reported.
The UN chief was taken to the base by a C-130 transport plane of the Chilean Air Force to get a firsthand look on how global warming is affecting glaciers on the frozen continent.
“This trip, you may call it an eco-trip, but I’m not here as a choice,“ he told reporters as he stood on the landing strip in a red-and-blue parka.
“I’m here as a messenger of all the warnings on climate change. I’m here to observe the impact of the global warming phenomena, to see for myself and to learn all I can about what’s happening in Antarctica and actually around the world.“
During the briefing, the scientists told the UN secretary-general of melting glaciers both in Antarctica and the southern end of the Andes that they attributed to climate change.
The examples included the fate of an ice cap known as the Larsen Platform that melted away in just 20 days, despite its considerable size of 400 square kilometers (155 square miles).
Hannah Point Glacier, for its part, receded 120 meters (yards) in several years.
Boarding a small Twin Otter plane, Ban flew around the island to get a bird’s eye view of the situation and made a brief landing at Collins Glacier whose size shrinks by 10 meters (yards) every year.
“All we have seen can be impressive and beautiful, extraordinary beautiful, but at the same time it’s a disturbing truth,“ Ban commented on his tour.
“You have seen the melting of glaciers. The glaciers of King George Island have shrunken by 10 percent recently. If the international community does something now we will be able to prevent a further progress of the global warming.“
After the aerial tour, Ban boarded a boat and crossed a narrow bay to visit South Korea’s Sejong Research Centre, where scientists are monitoring the health of Antarctica.
He said he wanted the international community to provide a political answer to the challenge of global warming.
“This is an emergency,“ Ban stressed. “To an emergency situation, we need emergency act.“

Fadlallah Calls for New Intifada
TEHRAN, Nov. 10--A top Lebanese Shiite cleric called on the Palestinian nation to launch a new Intifada (uprising).
Delivering a Friday prayer sermon in Beirut, Allameh Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah said the Zionist Israeli regime is an aggressor and enemy of Arab nations, Muslims and the Palestinian nation, Fars News Agency reported.
“It is regrettable to hear the US and some European countries call Israel the region’s only democratic regime,“ he said, in reference to its oppressive measures against Palestinians and current threats of carrying out a major offensive after the so-called US peace conference by the end of November.
The top cleric noted that the US is trying to escape from its defeat in Iraq by creating a hue and cry over Lebanese problems and threatening Iran over its peaceful nuclear activities.
Fadlallah criticized some Arab leaders for giving political concessions to the Zionist regime.
“These Arab countries are actually working in line with the interests of the Zionist regime. Some Arab leaders even call the Zionist regime as their friend and they consider the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as the only way for establishing friendly ties,“ he said.
Fadlallah noted that Washington was trying to achieve “political victory“ in Lebanon for concealing its failure in Iraq.

Norman Mailer Dies

Norman Mailer
|
WASHINGTON,
Nov. 10--Norman Mailer, the pugnacious two-times Pulitzer Prize winner who was a dominating presence on the US literary scene across seven decades, died on Saturday of kidney failure, his family said.
Mailer, 84, had undergone lung surgery in October.
“With great sorrow, the family of Norman Mailer announces his passing on November 10, at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City,“ the statement said, Reuters reported.
In more than 40 books and a torrent of essays, Mailer provoked and enraged readers with his strident views on US political life and the wars in Vietnam and Iraq.
Mailer’s first book, “The Naked and the Dead,“ is considered one of the finest novels about World War Two and made him a celebrity at age 25 when published in 1948.
Mailer’s works were often filled with violence, sexual obsession and views that angered feminists. He later reconsidered many of his old positions but never surrendered his right to speak his mind.

Deceptive Quarters
By Armin Hedayati
In the political world deception and hypocrisy are the norm not the exception. This is all the truer when Israel is involved.
The deputy prime minister of the usurper state, Shaul Mofaz last week publicly accused International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei of siding with Iran and its nuclear program. He went so far as to demand that the senior UN diplomat be removed from his post.
Speaking to reporters in Washington, the hawkish Mofaz said, “Policies followed by ElBaradei endanger world peace. His irresponsible attitude of sticking his head in the sand over Iran’s nuclear program should lead to his impeachment.“
In recent months fear-mongers and war planners in the Bush’s White House and Israel intensified their propaganda stunts against both the UN nuclear watchdog and its boss.
Not long ago pro-Israel western regimes systematically accused Tehran of not cooperating enough with IAEA inspectors. They had hoped (in vain) that new intimidation and added pressure on Islamic Republic would force Tehran to back off and halt its nuclear activities.
Now that Iran and the IAEA have held several rounds of constructive talks for putting the final touches to all the pending nuclear issues and addressing ambiguities, the US and Israel have decided to become a nuisance for the agency and ElBaradei.
That the US, its western allies and above all Israeli rulers should be angry and single out the IAEA for special drubbing is no surprise.
The decaying scenario prepared by George Bush and his pals in Tel Aviv calls for permanently introducing Iran as a country that is indifferent to the demands of the international community, especially over cooperating with the IAEA and magnifying “ambiguities“ about Iran’s nuclear program.
The bottom line is that if Iran sets the record straight and further improves nuclear transparency, there would simply be no pretext left for the neocons to tighten the economic sanctions or bark about military aggression against Iran.
The anti-Iran scenario is fast fading due to the frank and serious negotiations between Iran and the agency.
Over the past few months, the question about production of plutonium has been taken care of while the issue of P1 and P2 centrifuges have also been settled.
The next item on the joint agenda is determining the source of contaminations at Tehran University’s College of Engineering. If the talks proceed on the wavelength seen in the past several days, the nuclear issue will be wrapped up via technical and legal channels.
If and when that happens, there will be only one more thing left: returning Iran’s nuclear case from the UN Security Council to the IAEAŠthe place where it rightly belongs.
For now America has demanded rather pathetically that ElBaradei steer clear off political affairs related to the Security Council and Israel has called for him to find another job.
Interestingly enough, the US as the only country that has used nuclear weapons, and Israel as a rabid opponent of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT) have launched a new campaign against the IAEA. Welcome to another negative chapter in US-Israeli lies!
